Dear Forest Lake Photography Club Members,
We are excited to invite you to a special macro photography shoot at the beautiful Mt Coot-tha Gardens in Brisbane on Saturday, 6 December 2025, starting at 8:00 am sharp.
If you’re arriving at 8:00am meet at the Information Centre or call me on 0477 111 255.
If you’re arriving earlier – you can access the garden from the brick ponds near the admin building. You might get some great shots if you’re early.

This is a fantastic opportunity to discover the wonders of macro photography in one of Brisbane’s most picturesque natural settings. What makes this session especially valuable is the chance to learn directly from Paul Harrop, one of our experienced members, who will share his hands-on techniques and tips. The image above is one of Paul’s.
Paul specialises in hand-held macro photography, focusing on capturing insects and other tiny moving subjects. His approach avoids tripods and focus stacking, since these methods don’t work well for live, moving insects. Instead, Paul’s technique emphasises steady hand work with the right gear and settings, offering an authentic and dynamic shooting experience.
What to Bring:
- Your camera with any lens capable of close-up photography. It doesn’t have to be a dedicated macro lens.
- A knee pad if you’re comfortable carrying one — Paul suggests slip-on kneepads for comfort during low-angle shots.
- Hats and sun protection to stay comfortable outdoors.
- Water bottle.
- If you plan on shooting stationary subjects like flowers, bringing a tripod will be helpful.
- For those who have a macro lens, flash, and diffuser, bringing these along will enhance your creative options.
Whether you’re a seasoned macro shooter or looking to try it for the first time, this session promises to be both educational and fun.
Looking forward to seeing you there, ready to explore the tiny world through our lenses! Click GOING!!!
